Defence in NSW
ith Australia’s most comprehensive industrial base,
NSW industry is integrated into local and international
defence supply chains. The diverse capabilities offered
by the State’s small-medium enterprises (SME) are
essential to Australian defence requirements.
These capabilities extend across the Land, Sea, Air and Joint domains.
They can be found in Sydney and various regional centres. The defence
industry in Sydney encompasses the industrial heartland of Western
Sydney, the naval capabilities and infrastructure at Garden Island, and
world leading IT and system integration capabilities in the Macquarie Park/
North Ryde corridor.
NSW has a large skilled work force, an established Defence Force presence
with over 80 defence sites, world-leading research and development and
exceptional standards of education and training.
The Hunter region, north of Sydney, boasts a significant defence and
aerospace industry presence based around RAAF Williamtown - home
to Australia’s current and future fast jet fleet including the Joint Strike
Fighter, with DMO operating three Systems Program Offices in the region
as well. The Hunter has a strong industrial base, with capabilities in
aerospace repair, maintenance and overhaul, electronics, manufacturing,
ship building and repair and training.
The Shoalhaven region is home to HMAS Albatross, Australia’s naval
aviation base, and has a long and proud history of supplying innovative
defence technology and services to the Australian and global defence
Industry in the Shoalhaven has a broad spectrum of capabilities
including; design, manufacture and in-service support of mechanical and
electronic systems, test regimes, simulation and training services, technical
consultancy services and infrastructure design and construction.
