TT is one of the world’s largest defence contractors and a leading
provider of night vision devices; battlefield communication systems;
air traffic management solutions; counter-IED systems; electronic
warfare technologies; leading-edge cyber security and space-based
surveillance, weather and GPS satellite payloads.
International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT Corporation’s predecessor)
was established in 1920 and many may not be aware of this, but ITT’s
presence in Australia also dates back to the 1920s. One of ITT’s earliest
manufacturing plants was located in Sydney and the Australian government
was one of its earliest customers. Key milestones in ITT’s involvement in
ITT established Standard Telephone and Cables (STC) and a
factory in Sydney, and the Australian Post Master General (PMG) placed
orders for magneto switchboards and repeater coils.
STC manufactured field and airborne wireless sets, radio
direction beacons and precision parts for artillery gunsights in support
of Australia’s involvement in WW II.
- By the end of World War II, STC is Australia’s biggest electronic
equipment manufacturer and returns to the production of telephones
- The Australian government consults ITT on the best television
system to introduce into Australia and Professor Harry Messel of Sydney
University, enlists STC’s help to create Australia’s first computer, known
- STC exports high-quality, affordable microwave systems, defence
signalling systems and power supplies, to more than 60 countries.
- IT T Flygt begins operations in Australia and today the business
is now known as ITT Water & Wastewater. ITT is the largest provider of
pumps for domestic, industrial and mining applications, supporting the
water needs of Australian councils, utilities and mining industry.
ITT provides the NINOX night vision goggles to the ADF and
SINCGARS battlefield radio systems to the NZDF.
- I T T pumps power the white-water kayak courses at the Olympic
Games in Sydney.
ITT equips the Australian Defence Force with F/A-18 Super
Hornet electronic warfare systems, CVRJ counter-IED systems and
Naval electronic warfare systems.
- IT T establishes ITT Defence Australia Pty Ltd and opens an office
From these beginnings ITT has continued to engage Australian industry,
to assist with opportunity identification and the sales and support of ITT
equipment and systems in Australia and presently has a formal relationship
with BAE Systems, Jenkins Engineering, Global Defence Solutions, Allied
Data and Strategic General Services. Each of these companies provides
key support for specific ITT equipment and systems in Australia in the
BAE Systems – ITT has enjoyed an excellent relationship with BAE
Systems Australia stretching back over many years. BAE Systems was ITT’s
in-country partner for the delivery and sustainment of the ADF NINOX
Night Vision program and continues to provide in-service support for
a range of ITT’s optoelectronic Night Vision products to the Australian
Defence Force and State Government Authorities.
The ongoing success of this relationship has been due to the combination
of ITT’s superior products, coupled with BAE Systems Australia’s technical
expertise and knowledge of local opto-electronics regulations and
Jenkins Engineering – JEDS was ITT Electronic System’s in-country
partner for the systems integration and through life support of the Collins
Class Submarine ES-3701 ESM System (and in conjunction with Avalon
Systems), is ITT’s partner for delivery of the Air Warfare Destroyer ESM
System. Both Jenkins and Avalon provide essential components of the ITT
ESM solution for both Collins and AWD.
ITT acknowledges the importance of Australian Industry Content (AIC)
to the Royal Australian Navy and ITT RSS through its antecedents, has
been actively engaged with JEDS for over 20 years, supporting ITT ESM
equipment on RAN vessels. This commitment has ensured that RSS
products have been supported in Australia to a level equal to that of OEM
factory support, but with the responsiveness provided by a local SME.
This relationship has developed to the point where ITT RSS has
fully integrated the JEDS Low Band DF Sub-System (LBDFSS) into the
ITT ES-3701 ESM system and as a result JEDS receives the benefits of
Super Hornet with ITT EW systems.
